Floyd Mayweather donates $40,000 to National Golden Gloves – Boxing News
Floyd Mayweather, the current WBC welterweight champion, has been generous enough to support the organisation that made him what he has today. Mayweather’s amateur career was devised by the same organisation, and so the unbeaten American donated $40,000
earlier this week to the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. The contest is being held in Mesquite, Nevada, this week.
Mayweather has been generous towards the tournament for quite some time. He has been financially helping them out to churn amateurs in professionals. When asked about his commitment to the tournament, Mayweather said, “I think a lot of champions should give
back. I think a lot of champions should do what I'm doing.”
On the other hand, Dave Packer, the acting president of Golden Gloves of America Inc, appreciated Floyd’s efforts saying, “We're really grateful for Floyd's contribution. Floyd is the only one that has ever done it. He's the only fighter that has ever given
back to National Golden Gloves this way.”
Mayweather’s commitment is not just to financially help the tournament, but he insists he will cover the entire cost of the National Junior Golden Gloves which will be held in July in the same city. However, the cost of the tournament has not been finalised
yet but will be somewhere in six figures, according to the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe.
The reason why Mayweather is so committed to the organisation is that he has spent most of his childhood and adolescence there. He trained in Michigan Golden Gloves, from where he learned early boxing.
Mayweather has had a great career to date. He is an unbeaten fighter who has stepped in the ring 42 times. He is currently scheduled to fight Miguel Cotto, Puerto Rican, tomorrow (Saturday) May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight will have Mayweather’s
undefeated streak on the line while Miguel will bring his title to the fight.
For now, the fight is being considered the biggest bout of 2012. Even though Cotto is the underdog, many analysts are of the view that with proper strategy and training, Cotto has the potential to beat Mayweather.
