Floyd Mayweather has been quite respectful towards Miguel Cotto, his opponent tonight, but not anymore. As expected, the unbeaten American known for his taunts and trash talking finally gave up the silence and thrashed the Puerto Rican champion. Both the
fighters exchanged heavy words at the weigh-in session. Not only this, both the fighters even quarrelled backstage.
Mayweather weighed in at 151, whereas Cotto weighed in at 154. While many analysts are of the view that this is Mayweather’s first at this weight and he might lose track, the WBC welterweight champion made his brutal intentions clear. Unexpectedly, Mayweather
thwacked chewing gum in Cotto’s face saying, “When you face Floyd Mayweather, you face the best.”
On the other hand, retaliating to Mayweather’s act, Cotto said, “(Mayweather) never faced anyone like me -- that’s why he’s undefeated. I can’t just go to the body. I’m here to fight. If he wants to run, I’m ready for that. If he wants to face me, I’m ready
for that. I’m ready for everything.”
Mayweather said, “I feel comfortable … Miguel Cotto looked dry, drained. I’m comfortable. Whenever I’m comfortable, I’m going to fight well. Take my time. Execute my game plan from the beginning and see what we got.”
The warm face-off could not have been worst. Mayweather, who claimed he has ‘respect’ for Cotto just two days back, came back to his true self. Trash talking has always been Mayweather’s way of keeping his opponents under pressure while keeping his fans
excited. This time, Mayweather’s spice was missing but he just brought it in on time and now things are better than ever. Now it actually looks like a mega-bout that will have Mayweather in his full aggressive form.
In their previous face-off session, Cotto claimed that he has multiple strategies on hand to be the unbeaten. According to Cotto, when you face a fighter like Mayweather, you need to have more than just one strategy to fight with, since you can never know
what the American can come up with. On the other hand, Mayweather simply said that he is confident and he will do what he always does in the ring.
