Floyd Mayweather says Amir Khan should have been disqualified in the Peterson fight – Boxing news
Floyd Mayweather, the current five-division champion, says Amir Khan should have been disqualified during the fight for excessive holding and running.
It should be noted here that Amir Khan, since the last two years, has been in touch with Mayweather for a possible bout between the two. However, after Mayweather’s dissenting statement, seems like Amir will find himself heart-broken.
Amir Khan took on Lamont Peterson on December 10, 2011, with his titles, the WBO welterweight championship and the IBF light-welterweight title on the line. Peterson won through a split decision which according to Amir was unjust. The referee Joe Cooper
reiterated that two points were deducted from Khan’s score in round 7 and 12 for pushing Peterson. One judge scored the fight 115-110 while the other two scored it 113-112.
After the fight, Amir filed an appeal with the IBF seeking either an immediate rematch or a decision reversal. The IBF recently announced an immediate rematch but it could not take place since Peterson’s side filed an application against it. Amir’s side
and Golden Boy Promotions have offered Peterson a 50/50 split for the rematch yet Peterson is not interested in it.
On the other hand, Mayweather, who is considered as crowd’s favourite worldwide, was being considered to have a fight with Amir before the mishap. In fact, some analysts were even of the view that Amir is a major threat to Mayweather’s career but right now
it does not seem so.
At the moment, Khan, who is reluctant to have his rematch, seems disturbed and he will not be able to take a fighter like Mayweather. In addition, since Mayweather has shown dissent towards his fighting style, a match between the both is nowhere happening
soon. Mayweather will be heading towards taking on Miguel Cotto who is the seven-division world champion on May 5. Later on, Mayweather will serve his 90-day sentence starting from June 1, 2012.
Mayweather, when asked about Khan’s fighting style in the Peterson bout, said, “I don’t know too much about Amir Khan. I think he does too much running and holding. I honestly feel he should have been disqualified [against Peterson].”
