Floyd Mayweather says he will give Victor Ortiz a rematch if he beats Andre Berto – Boxing news
The five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, Floyd Mayweather, has said he is ready to give Victor Ortiz another chance, provided he beats Andre Berto.
Leonard Ellerbe, who is the chief of Mayweather Promotions, recently stated that there will be no rematch between Mayweather and Ortiz.
However, the undefeated American legend, Mayweather, who holds an incredible record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, remarked on his Twitter page that he is ready to give Ortiz a rematch.
“I’ll give Ortiz a rematch but first he’s got to get passed Andre Berto,” Mayweather Tweeted.
Mayweather and Ortiz recently met on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in a much-anticipated bout but it ended in a controversial way.
Ortiz intentionally head-butted Mayweather in the earlier stages of the fourth round for which he was docked a point by the referee, Joe Cortez. Later on when the fight was reset, Ortiz went on to hug Mayweather as an apology, but Mayweather all of a sudden
responded him with left-right combination punches which knocked him out.
Therefore Mayweather, who was formerly rated as the number one pound-for-pound boxer in the world, reckons he did exactly the right thing against Ortiz.
“The only man who can beat me is the man in the mirror. Victoria Ortiz’s new nickname is ‘Take 2 of these [punches] and call me in the morning.’ Victoria Ortiz thought it was a head-butting contest. But that 2 piece gave him some act right,” he said.
Ortiz has already beaten Andre Berto in a 12-round unanimous decision in April 2010. Therefore, it should not be a big problem for Ortiz. However, we are yet to see if Ortiz sets up a clash with Berto and beats him in order to get into the ring with Mayweather
once again.
