Floyd Mayweather signs largest boxing contract ever – Boxing News
Floyd Mayweather, the current WBC welterweight champion, will challenge Miguel Cotto tomorrow for the junior middleweight title. Floyd Mayweather has once again proved the fact that they do not call him ‘Money Mayweather’ for nothing. He is the man who always
gets the biggest contracts, and this time he is making history. Mayweather has signed a contract of at least $32 million for his fight against Miguel Cotto.
According to executive director of Nevada State Athletic Commission, Keith Kizer, Mayweather’s bout agreement has $32 million figure on it. Kizer called it the largest ever guarantee that has been listed on a contract. He revealed that the previous one was
for Mike Tyson, $30 for his rematch against Evander Holyfield in 1997.
On the other hand, Richard Schaefer called it the biggest ever guarantee in the history of boxing. He added, “Nobody ever had a guarantee bigger. Floyd is in a league of his own. I think that this shows it again.”
It should be noted here that this is not all what Mayweather will earn. He will also get a share from the pay per view proceedings. As per analysis, the fight will sell more than 1 million units, therefore an additional $5 million approximately will be held
by Mayweather.
Mayweather earned around $25 million for his last two bouts. According to Golden Boy Promotions, this fight against Cotto is becoming the most popular fight of Mayweather to date.
Mayweather’s closest adviser, Leonard Ellerbe spoke about the contract saying, “This is just a testament to his star power. Floyd Mayweather is a one-man walking conglomerate. Of course, this is exciting. Over the last 12 months he is the highest-paid athlete
in sports.”
Mayweather will take on Cotto tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather has remained unbeaten to date, therefore his streak will be on the line. On the other hand, Miguel Cotto’s title will be on the line and if he loses, Mayweather will grab it.
Cotto is currently 8 is to 1 underdog for the fight. However, the Puerto Rican has assured that he will turn out to be Mayweather’s toughest opponent to date.
