Floyd Mayweather vs Amir Khan – who will reign supreme?
While most of us boxing fans eagerly await the much talked about contest between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr for the 200 million dollar match, there might be another gladiator of the ring anxiously, meticulously preparing to take on the champion
Mayweather himself. At just 23, Khan has surely proven to all and sundry that he has the potential and talent to become the next big thing in boxing. Khan, who began his boxing career at the age of 13, went on to win a gold medal in the world junior Olympics.
At the age of 17, he became the youngest British Olympic boxing medallist when he won a silver medal in the Athens Olympics. This young prodigy was destined for greatness and now, he is being dubbed as the apparent heir to the champion boxer, Manny Pacquiao,
who is termed by many as the best pound for pound boxer in the world. This claim has been made by the master trainer of the PacMan himself, Freddie Roach, who is also the trainer of the pride of Bolton, 'King Khan'.
His lightning speed and nimbleness on the boxing ring makes him a truly formidable opponent and he has surely proved his determination to be the best, by training exceptionally hard day and night. Amir Khan was being helped by PacMan himself to further refine
his mastery in the trade of boxing. It is indeed in Roach’s own Wild Card Gym where Pacquiao is lacing himself with the requisite armour to fight the sturdier Antonio Margarito for his mind baffling eighth world title, while King Khan is girding himself to
defend his light welterweight title against the Argentinean Marcos Maidana.
During their practice sessions in the ring, where both the stars Khan and Pacquiao took against each other, coach Roach noticed that for the first time, Khan seemed to take the better of PacMan with his explosive fighting style and his swift stealth mode.
Despite agreeing that Manny was still ahead of King Khan, he noticed that at times Amir came out on top.
"Manny is still ahead but he knows that Amir has come out on top at least once. Manny is still super quick and speed kills. But if anything Amir is just a tiny fraction faster now and his punching is getting more powerful by the day. Manny's punching is
more dense but the gap between them is narrowing."
During his stint as a professional boxer, Amir boasts 23 wins in 24 encounters with only one loss. Seventeen of his wins have been knockouts with a win percentage of 70.8, slightly better than Pacquiao’s 67.9%. However, it is unlikely that Khan will ever
take on Pacquiao in the boxing ring, since to Khan Pacquiao is more than a good friend. For a match as big as that, he would want to have Roach in his corner and with Roach, Manny is bound to be there.
As for his comparison to the great Floyd Mayweather, with his form and hard work, Khan seems set to take on the great champion of the ring himself. Khan has been a revelation on the battleground. What Khan does foresee in the future is a fight with the great
Mayweather to prove himself a fighter of the same calibre as Pacquiao.
"At the moment, I would be just Floyd's opponent. First, I will deal with Maidana - I believe I'll be the first to knock him out but I don't care if it goes the distance - and then unify the title by stopping the winner of Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander.
Do that and then, towards the end of next year, I can go in against Mayweather in my prime, in a 50-50 fight", said King Khan.
As this fine young British born Pakistani strives to fulfil the prophecy on battleground, both England and Pakistan must be extremely proud of the achievements of this gladiator who has been a true phenomenon in the sport of boxing.
