Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto gets finalised – Boxing news
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will go one on one with the current three-division World Champion Miguel Cotto for the WBA Super Welterweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 5.
As of now, both the fighters have confirmed the news saying that they will soon be going for Olympic-style drug testing for the event that will be televised live on pay-per-view.
Even though it is quite disappointing for Mayweather and Pacquiao fans that their long awaited super-fight did not get through the odds. Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were in direct contact with each other recently to discuss possibilities of the
fight, however nothing really worked out.
Mayweather had offered Pacquiao a 60/40 split which the Filipino declined. Since then, rumours of a possible fight with Cotto were in the air and now they have materialised. Therefore, Pacquiao is now off the wagon while Cotto will be the man heading towards
fighting the American superstar Mayweather.
It should be noted here that Mayweather needs to increase his weight if he wants to fight Cotto while Cotto will be offering no compromises.
According to Mayweather, “It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase
once again and Cotto’s reign as champion will come to an end on May 5.”
On the other hand, Cotto, after defeating Margarito last year, is fully confident of his skills.
He said, “I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing. I’ve never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me.”
He further said that he has accepted that came in his way just for his fans and that this is what the whole sport of boxing is all about. A confident Cotto addressing his fans said that they should stay tuned for the May 5 bout as he will be beating Mayweather
convincingly.
Even though the bout between Mayweather and Cotto is not as big as the one between Pacquiao and Mayweather would have been, it still is among the most highly anticipated bouts of the year.
