Question:

Fluid behind eardrums--About to study abroad in china (12 days from now)?

I was just diagnosed with some (not a lot) fluid behind at least one eardrum. I am on antibiotics, and know about mucinex, sudafed, and earplanes. . Should this be enough to keep my eardrums from bursting? Any advice? I'm scared to fly, but have no choice. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and has cost over 12,000 dollars!

  1. You have two excellent answers already. I would advise to get off all dairy immediately & start chiropractic care immediately. You may not be "well" in time but you should be improved.

Also get some ear oil at the health food store that contains Mullein & Garlic & start using that & take it in your luggage so you'll have it in China. Also get started on a good quality enteric-coated probiotic to counter what the antibiotic is going to do to your gut.

The flight to China from U.S. is a killer. Drink all the liquids they offer you on the airline and then some at the airport.

  2. The most likely reason why you have fluid behind your eardrum is because your Eustachian Tube is closed off. The best way to open it back up is to go to a chiropractor. Usually it is a misaligned vertebra in the very top of the neck that closes off a Eustachian Tube, especially in young children.

  3. Because 80% of ear infections do not require antibiotics, (especially serous otitis media which you likely have) you may want to try some dietary measures in addition to reduce fluid behind your ears.  I would reduce dairy, wheat, and sugar if I were you and intend to be flying soon.  I've flown with fluid behind my ears and although my tympanic membrane did not rupture, I still found the pressure changes extremely painful and scary.

The eustachian tube needs to drain in to your throat and if your throat is swollen or sore from irritation, infection, or food allergies, this process may not be functioning optimally.

Get rest, drink fluids, eat healthy, and in 12 days...you should be fine.  Have a great trip!
