Is the Powell Signature headjoint any good? Do you know any nice headjoints that I can get used or new for under a thousand dollars?

  2. Hi Michael,

So.. you are needing a new headjoint???   This is good, as it really makes a difference in the way you sound.  The Powell Signature headjoints are OK... but not great nor are the flutes they were designed  for.    Professional Powell flutes are tremendous... the ones they are making for the consumer market are not so good as they are not even made here in the US.

You can buy a new custom David Williams headjoint for around $1100.. the last I looked.  Also, another namebrand I recommend is the Drelinger by Sandy Drelinger.  Both of these are great heads and many professional musicians play on them.      Burkhart and Jack Moore make nice heads as well... but I am going to bet you would like either Williams or Drelinger.

I am sending you a link to a friend of mine's business.  He sells used flutes as well as heads.  The link I am sending shows the headjoints  he has  but he could also have others that he has not yet posted.    Prices look high... but if you call him,  he might have other heads that are less expensive.  I do see he has a Williams for $1000.

His name is Phil Unger... everyone knows of him :))  I like the way Phil does business.    If you call and request a trial for heads,  he will send out a few for you to play test.   If you decide on one... good... just send back the others.   (Your parents will have to be contacting him, of course).

If you decide to do this... it would be to your best advantage to email me for the contact referal (my name).    He and I are friends and he might give you more personal service if he knew I sent you to him :))

Also,  you can contact David Williams or Sandy Drelinger by looking up their web sites for phone contact numbers.   I have spoken to each of these custom headjoint makers and have headjoints by each ... which is why I do recommend them.  However,  they do not sell used heads.. as they ONLY have  new ones.

Well,  that is what I can suggest for you.  I hope you can get that custom headjoint.   It is going to make a world of difference in your playing.. definately.

    Thanks for reading.  :))

  4. Hi Michael

Powell Signature headjoint is designed to be easy to play. The tone and richness that is produced with a solid silver headjoint is more than noticable.

I have had the chance to listen to a King flute with the 24K gold plating on top of the sterling silver as well as their solid silver model.

The sound is so smooth and so rich that you can never forget the tone once your ears have listened to it.

edit...my flutist has the King gold plated flute, as well as Armstrong silver.
