Hey guys. I dont know if any of you are fly fishers out there, but I am... I've been fly fishing for a few months, and I love it... I've taken up my backyard pool as a casting ground. Will the chlorine in it deteriorate my fly line??

  1. yes as Airflow says it will deteriorate it in fact even worse is the smell it will grab and hold onto. even washing it and putting it away the problem comes when on the spool it all sticks together (after a long period of non use) like winter and is a real nightmare getting off. practice down at a lake park mid day if you can there will be a lot less joggers walkers and bike riders around..

  2. don't worry about the chlorine, it won't affect anything. Keep up the practice..... fly fishing is truly an art.

  3. I don't see a problem with it, because I do the same thing, my fly rod, spinning, bait-casting, whatever I'm using, have all seen pool water. I've never had a problem with it before, because it might be that I always rinse my rods and reels off with fresh water when I'm done. So just as long as you spray off the chlorine just like you would do if you got back from fishing in the salt, it should be fine.

  4. Sure am a fly fisherman, been fly fishing most of my life! the chlorine could damage the coating of your fly line, to protect the line apply some line cleaner after each use, this will remove any dirt and chlorine and keep it floating high, don't use it on an intermediate or sinking line as it will keep it afloat. Try one of these, the rio is excellent and ive used it on some of my sage fly lines with no problems just great casts the scientific anglers is also a good line treatment.

If its a good fly line i would avoid the chlorine as not only will it bleach the line but will reduce its lubrication and so minimize casting distance and line "shootability" try and find a stretch of grass if possible. If not keep using the pool but apply line cleaner to the line after each use. Tight lines to ya!

This site has some great info on fly casting, dont let the name stop you it is fly fishing, have a look through it.

  5. SHOULD NOT, BUT RUN A LARGE AMOUNT OF NON-CHLORINATED WATER ON IT BEFORE YOU PUT IT AWAY
