  1. I believe carp are bottom feeders.

    Edit

To all those people giving me thumbs down, check out my source. The real source was my brain but apparently not convincing enough. 1st line down there says

    "Common carp are bottom feeders"

When cleaning carp, you have to remove the mud vein. You don't get mud from flies.

  2. Interesting to say the least - I know they do come up to the surface but I didn't think they fed there but I guess you learn something everyday...

  3. Its not a new sport its been around for a good few years now :) most people that do it fish on comercial fisheries and tie a fly to resemble a dog biscuit or boilie as thats what these fish are used to feeding on ;).Ive never tried it myself but it looks like fun ! but if you do try it make sure you get a heavy duty fly rod :p.

  4. I have Fly fished for carp in the past It's great fun. I've even used this method on lakes for carp using a cork ball on a hair rig tied to the fly leader you get some odd looks at first but people soon come looking and asking when you start catching more than them....lol try it it's fun.

  5. Carp certainly do eat off the surface, and I have caught them on nothing more than bread bated hook and line. so I am sure you can catch off a floating fly.

Worth an experiment, but would need to be a warm evening when the flies are up and probably in a lake.

Though for river fishing have you tried grayling? They can be caught on a fly.

  6. Mike O'Brien is in Northeast PA and i believe is the man that started the flyfishing for carp craze years ago.The carp that Mike guides for on the upper Susquehanna River are often referred to as the bonefish of the Susqehanna. People that flyfish for carp usally use streamers and Bob Clouser ties an awesome variation of his world famous Clouser minnow just for carp. I actually hooked 3 carp while fishing for trout on the Little Juniata River a couple weeks ago while fishing for trout,it was kind of a fluke though because the 17 year cicadas were all over the water and the carp were swimming along the surface with their mouths open and sucking them in . In a normal carp fishing situation you have to find carp that are mudding and make a precise cast without spooking them. It is challenging and a lot of fun but make sure you are using a heavy  enough rod and leader.

  7. Its not a new sport its been around for a while. The people i see doing it tie flies that look like cotton seeds. When the seeds start falling from the trees that is when they use the fly. It looks liek a lot of fun, but i have not tried it yet.

  8. Ive tried it and to be honest i didn't like it, i used a nine wt fly rod and soem carp flies tied with deer hair, similar to a sedge pattern, i had a few but will be staying with trout on a fly rod.

  9. I saw a man fly fishing for carp in a very urban creek and became friends with him while picking his brain about this.

Success was not measured by fish caught but by "hook ups",though I did see him land one.He would look and hunt for them, then quietly stalk then present the fly.I believe it was some kind of a nymph. You want to use a wet or a fly that sinks, any way....the fish would approach the bait and mouth it-that is when he set the hook.

Carp are very wary and will spit out something that does not feel right.I have seen him on many occasions and have seen the technique in action and have used a modified version of it with a spin caster, very light line a small hook and corn---stalk present and set the hook when you see them mouth the bait.Great fun workin the fighting drag a half hour on a 10 pound carp if that suits you.

  10. lots of people fly for carp. couple of fishing shows have used fly rods for carp. i use 12lb test on a spinning reel, and have caught a few that made me question to go up a few pounds on the line. now, apply that to a fly set-up.

carp do eat off the surface and just about anywhere in the water column.
