Question:

Fly spray and tack? Slippery?

Ok, I know this is a stupid question but I'm going on a trail ride within the next week and I'm of course bringing fly spray for my girl, I know show sheen and other products like that make their coats slippery?

Does fly spray make their coat slippery? Can I spray her and then tack her up or should I take her up and then spray on the uncovered spots?

Thanks in advance.

  1. fly spray isnt slilppery.. spray b4 you tack her up so it doesnt ruin your tack... but if you do it after your tack, just dont spray your tack

  2. well, i have show sheen, and i am not trying to sound cocky, but if u read the bottle it tells u never to spray where the saddle goes, so just spray like herboobs, (my horses get flies there bad) and if u dont like spraying right on her face, spray it on a facial horse brush, then basically brush her face, by the way have fun with ur trail ride, i love trail riding, i just went wednesday for 3 hours and we covered about 5 miles, me and my mommy did!!!  lol!!

  3. some types of fly spray will make them slick. avoid long-acting oil based sprays (the type that are suppost to work for up to a week, or be waterproof). these are ok to use but don't spray them where your saddle and girth will sit. a regular water based spray (like what comes from your tack shop for 10 dollars a bottle... wipe, bronco, etc) won't make her slippery and you can spray before you ride, but they don't protect long either. it's safer to tack up then spray if you're unsure what type of spray you have or if you want to be extra careful

  4. Certain fly sprays can make your horse slick.  Look at the ingredients.  Make sure there are no oils.  If there are spray after wards.  They flys aren't going to bother the places that are covered up anyways.  If you have a non oil based spray...go ahead and use it before.

Additionally...You should NEVER spray them in their face.  You should get a rub on kind or spray it in your hand then rub in on their face.

  5. Use your fly spray after you tack up.

  6. I've used many, many kinds of fly spray, and NEVER found one that makes the horse slippery!  Even the week long and oil based ones don't.  Even if you don't apply them properly (which means brushing the spray into the coat) they don't make them slippery.

I HAVE found that spraying fly spray on my expensive tack can damage it, so I always spray the horse, brush it in, and let it dry before I tack up.  This way, I'm good for the ride, it's not on my tack, and the horse gets a good residual effect when the ride's over and he's turned out.

  7. No - fly spray doesn't do that ( unless you manage to find one that contains sillicone)

  8. Fly spray does not make them slippery. You can tack her up after spraying with no worries.

    Have a fun trail ride!

  9. i always spray them after they are  tacked up, besides why waste spray on the areas of the horse that the bugs cant get too anyway, you can also buy the wipes they work good on facial areas, ears, etc and you can fit them easily into your pocket are saddle bag or ? they are good for touching up, 'cause some repellents don't last through a long ride especially if your horse gets sweaty. hope this helps a little.

  10. Fly spray does make their coat slippery.  You can put it on before taking her up just not around the saddle area.  I don't recommend spraying before taking up but it won't make that much of a deal.

  11. You will be fine....Lol

FlySpray will not make them Slippery:)

    Happy Trail's!
