Flyers suffer third consecutive defeat after losing 5-3 to the Buffalo Sabres - NHL weekend roundup
The second game of Saturday was played at the Wells Fargo Arena with the Philadelphia Flyers playing host to the Buffalo Sabres.
With a win the Flyers could have tied up things for the league lead while the Sabres could move close to the Hurricanes in the running for the play-off as they were just one spot behind the Hurricanes.
The first period saw the Flyers come out strong and dominate the game as score twice.
However, the Sabres managed to fight their way back scoring thrice in the second period as the Flyers scored once.
The scores were level as the final period began and it was the Sabres who scored twice to win the game 5-3 in the end.
Drew Stafford of the Sabres was the star of the game as he scored a goal and came up with some excellent ice hockey during the entire game.
The game started off with both teams making a decent start to the game. There were several goal scoring chances for both sides early on but they failed to capitalise.
With the passage of time the teams grew in confidence and it was the Flyers who were better of the two teams when it came to the offence.
Added to this was the advantage of playing on home ice which saw them scoring in the 13th minute through Kris Versteeg during power play to get into the lead.
Both teams continued to create chances but it was the Flyers who scored once again in the 18th minute through James van Riemsdyk from a brilliant backhand shot to double their lead.
The period ended with the both teams making 9 goal attempts each during the period as the Flyers led 2-0 going into the break.
The second period started off with the Sabres absolutely on fire and they scored in the seventh minute through Drew Stafford to start their fight back into the game.
The brilliance in their passing saw them scoring once again in the ninth minute through Tyler Ennis from a quick fired shot to level the scores.
The home crowd was silence when the Sabres scored once again in the 11th minute through Andrej Sekera from a brilliant backhand shot to get into the lead. The Flyers finally scored through Kimmo Timonen in the 14th minute to level the
scores on 3-3 as the period ended.
The final period saw the Sabres continuing on the dominating roads as they scored once again in the seventh minute through Jason Pominville from a simple tip in shot to get into the lead.
The Sabres sealed the game as they scored through Nathan Gerbe once again in the 19th minute.
The Sabres won the game 5-3 in the end. During the final 20 minutes of play, the Sabres made 13 shots on goal while the Flyers made 12 shots on goal.
