a hawk is flying at 500 feet above ground her prey is flying at 200 feet above the ground the hawk dives at the rate of 20 feet per second the prey is rising at 10 feet per second

  1. in 10 secs the hawk catches the prey at 300 ft

    math is = total speed of convergence = 20+10 = 30 ft/sec

    distance = 300 feet (500-200)

    speed = dist/time; time = dist/speed = 300/30 = 10 secs

    in 10 secs the prey will be caught

    in 10 secs the hawk covers 20 * 10 = 200 feet.  therefore it has fallen from 500 by 200 feet ie to 300 feet
