car seats are always free to check on American. also you're welcome to take it on board for the baby to sit in. If the baby is under two and you didn't purchase a ticket for him/her then keep in mind American is pretty good arranging your seats so that you will have an extra seat anyway(we block it for you). Don't stress about the car seat and enjoy your flight.
