Question:

Flying Jets not in the military?

Is there anyway to fly small single or twin engine jets for recreational use?

I saw some old jets from the 60's and 70's for a few thousand dollars. Would you be able to buy an old military jet or even a new one if you had the cash???? Just to fly for fun?

  1. I know of a T38, f5, mig15, f4 and a Yak that are all privately owned. If you can buy it you can fly it.

    Be careful...

The primary investment in a jet aircraft is maintenance. I seriously doubt that you can buy a well-maintained operational jet aircraft for a few thousand dollars. The parts for jet aircraft cost a fortune, and you need a full-time mechanic with special tools in order to keep them in a safe flying condition. Keeping them in an unsafe condition is, of course, easier. These jets were not generally built for recreational use (there are exceptions - like the BD5J, but they are rare and probably have fatigue issues also by now) - they were built for military use - where they would have nearly unlimited resources for maintenance and parts replacement. These aircraft can and will kill you if you don't know what you are doing. So be careful.

  3. YES! ive seen old men in the states flying P51 mustangs!! hahaha. It would be a lifetime dream to get into one of those beautiful birds. But i think first u've got to attain a PPL, and then go grab one of those jets after they de-militarized it.

  4. Its quite possible. Many surplus combat jets are sold to private buyers after it is demilitarized.

There are many of them being bought and flown by private folks in the USA and Europe. You can get some of the old  Russian jets comparitively cheap.
