Flying Knee, opinions and facts?

Over time i've been in martial arts for about 8-9 months and i started out from knowing nothing to something. I always use to think flying unrealistic moves would win in a fight, i was unsatisfied with my predictions. I use to do a little muay thai and practiced some knees and elbows and i really liked them. As i moved on to my now primary art, Wing Chun, i started to have a little understand of Muay Thai. I started watching tony jaa movies and i saw the flying knees... i know movies are movies, but i started getting interested in that technique... i checked on youtube and i've seen a couple flying knees cause the KO of an opponent.. i probably saw one that failed but the idiot went running wide open and it hardly looked like he was gonna do a flying knee...

My question is: Do you find flying knees to be effective? I think i'm gonna add that technique into my arsenal because it looks very effective, only problem i worry about is keeping my guard up while its being done...

  1. There's nothing wrong with adding flying knees to a well-rounded striking arsenal.  I wouldn't expect it to work every time, just like anything else.  But with good timing & execution it can be devastating.  Remember James Irvin's knockout of Terry Martin?  Whew!

  2. Yeah flying knee's work, Remy Bonjaski used to use them all the time.  One of my mates was in a street fight, this lad came over and just smacked him.  Which proceeded by my mate flying through the air and connecting his knee in the other lads face (breaking his nose) lol.  So yeah I would use them along with elbows and head butts.  In a competition I would only use it if the other fighter was weakened or injured as it can be easy to counter.

  4. theyre basically a showoff technique like the superman punch.  its like throwing a haymaker; its prolly not gonna work and its prolly get you hurt badly, but if it somehow connects, which it probably wont, then you seriously hurt the other guy and look super cool doing it.

  5. iT ALL depends in you. It can be a powerful technique if you can use it correctly - timing, precision, and power. But if not, you'll be in trouble.

    It's just like using spinning back kick, spinning back fist, and reverse spinning kicks, which are deadly techniques but will surely fail if not executed properly;

  6. I think flying knees can be effective if you use it at the correct time

    It can leave you wide open also

  7. In my opinion moves like jump kicks and flying knees can work in the proper situation and with the proper timing. Sure it might not work too well in a street fight where fights are short and to the point, but in ring fighting they can be put to better use. Say your facing a guy in a ufc or muay thai match that allows moves like the flying knee. First Round, you shouldn't try to use it since the opponent is fresh, alert, and keeps his guard up. Also, if miss you're bound to receive a counterattack. However later on in the fight when the opponent is exhausted, acting more on instinct, and probably having his/her guard down more and less attentive, then employing a move like the flying knee will have a greater chance of connecting and a larger chance of ending the fight if it connects. Also if you miss, you can probably recover wel enough before your opponent takes advantage of your open guard

  8. Wefij A, how is a superman punch a showoff technique? It's pretty effective and doesn't leave you for open longer than anything else does?

    As for the flying knee, lots of fighters have gotten KOs with it. I personally can't do it for the life of me. The closest thing I've got to it in my arsenal is skipping knees from the thai clinch. But as was mentioned, it's a high-risk, high payoff technique.

    Practice it on pads and bags to get the basic form, practice it in drills and sparring to get the timing and distancing down, and evaluate your ability to use it from there. Don't spend all of your time on it, but taking a few minutes out of your day won't kill you.
