Flying Military Widebodies? A question for pilots who fly these?

C5, C17, C130 and so on..the larger planes

just want to know what it takes,

is it a good idea if you wanted to go commercial?

how did you get to where you are now?

  1. The airlines look very favorably upon any military pilot, including fighter pilots. The airlines know they're getting a disciplined, professional and focused pilot who has received excellent and intense training, and succeeded at the highest levels that exist. Oh - and all services require a commission to fly fixed-wing aircraft, which further indicates professional officer education and at least a Bachelor's degree.

    You really can't go wrong in this respect. If your long term goal is to fly 747s for the airlines, the military route will take you there quite nicely (once you get off active duty, that is) whether you end up flying F22s or C17s.

  2. If you get to fly a kc-10 tanker with the airforce, then you come out of it with a dc-10 type rating. If you wanna haul freight for fed ex, that might be the way to go
