Flying ant stung me?

Question

I live in West Chester, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Philly) and I was in my bathroom and noticed an ant looking creature and tried to squash it with my hand... it immediately bit me (stung pretty bad) and continued flopping around on the window... what I am wondering is what kind of species of insect this may of been, and if there is a list somewhere of the insect species that inhabit the eastern part of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia area) and if you could direct me to that list. Thanks
