Flying from Las Vegas to Kona. Will be gone for about a month.?

Do not want to buy a round trip ticket and get penalized when I change the date. Are there any companies that allow you to change return date with no penalty and if not would I just be better off buying a one way ticket? I will be going for a month. Coming back for about a week and then flying back again for a few months. Thank you.
