Question:

Flying from Toronto to Sydney, Aus?

I'll be flying from Toronto, Ont. to Sydney, Aus. in a few short months.

I have never flown and I am going by myself. I am wondering if anyone could tell me how to navigate around Pearson Int'l Airport in order to make it to my flight, and how to navigate Kingsford Smith Airport when I arrive.

What I'm curious about:

-security

-baggage

-basic layout of Kingsford Smith (I'll have someone who's been to Pearson with me when I leave T.O. so they can help me for a bit)

-customs check at arrival (customs forms?)

I think that's all, but any information you can give me will be appreciated.

  2. KSA is pretty straightforward.  Follow the crowd through customs and immigration.  Once you get through everything is pretty well signposted.  Taxis and buses out the front, and there is also a railway station.

  3. While you are on the plane near the end of the trip you will be given a customs declaration card. You must declare any food products or other items listed on the form. Once you arrive and exit the plane you will head towards customs and immigration - there are separate queues for Australians and international visitors. They will check your passport and visa. You will then move into customs where they will check your customs declaration and randomly check your bags to make sure you have declared everything. Trying to sneak food in is taken very seriously - declare it or throw it out.

You then can collect your baggage - just follow the signs to baggage collection, there will be a sign with your flight number on the end of the correct baggage carousel.

If you need to change some money you can do it at this stage. Or just withdraw Australian money using your debit card.

After that you can leave, there is a taxi area just outside, or follow the signs to the airport train station. Unfortunately both are fairly expensive, but the train is definately cheaper. You don't need to tip anyone in Australia, including taxi drivers.
