Question:

Flying lesson question?

My friend just got his license for flying the small cesna planes. He isnt sure but he thinks he can teach me to fly. I have only taken about 4 flights with a instructor and his schedule is pretty jam packed. Would my friend be allowed to teach me and legally get me all my hours and maybe even tests to get a pilots license?

  1. Unless your friend has checked out with a CFI to safely fly from the right seat, he will have to be in the left seat. Trying to learn from the right seat will mess you up.

So aside from all the very, very serious risks, it just wouldn't work.

Another big problem is that you have to learn by making mistakes and getting yourself out of them. Your friend will be in a really tough spot. If he lets you make mistakes, he may be unable to get you out of them in time, and then you both die. If he doesn't let you make mistakes, you won't learn anything and it will be frustrating for you.

Please be the smart one and don't put him in that position. And shame on him for getting a license and not knowing this stuff.

You can fly with him. You can be a passenger. He can teach you about the plane when he's not busy with take off, landing, or communication tasks. He can let you work the controls during safe times. You cannot log any time and it will not count towards any requirements.

The way you ask the question scares me though. Lots of little things set of alarm bells.

Just to clarify and refute some bad advice. HE MUST CHECK OUT IN THE RIGHT SEAT. This is not a legal requirement, he doesn't need a sign off or anything, it is a common sense requirement. If not, you will be in a situation where neither of you knows how to land the plane. You may bend the plane or even die. Seriously.

I was a licensed private pilot for a year and had never flown from the right seat. The first time I tried it, the CFI in the left seat had to take over when I misjudged the flare.

And where are you going to get the plane from? Every place I've ever rented a plane has required the renter to sit in the left seat unless they checked out with a CFI in the right seat.

  2. Negative.

  3. If you do go and practice with him make sure you do not log that time it is illegal

  4. LOL!!!

    That's rich.

  5. Legally he can't do it, obviously. He may be able to show you some stuff but since you don't have a licence and he's not an instructor you can't log the time. Only your friend will be able to log it. Your friend will also be sitting on the LHS because he probably isn't rated to sit on the RHS. This means you will 1. not be able to log the hours and 2. be sitting on the wrong side.

  6. No...you need to be a certified instructor to teach.

  7. Let me answer your question a little more realistically than some of the others.

Yes, your friend could probably "teach you to fly". There are some problems, however:

    1) As you said, he just got his license. Are you sure you want to learn from such a rookie? You wouldn't do that in any other field.

    2) You couldn't count any of your time toward your license. So if he spent 40 hours teaching you to fly, you'd have to repeat all that with a real instructor.

    3) Contrary to what others have said, it's no problem for your friend to move over to the right seat. It will take him three or four landings to get it right, but it's not that hard.

    4) If you damage the airplane, the insurance company will figure out what you were up to and will deny the claim. You should always consider yourself responsible for 100% of the cost of the airplane every time you fly it. If you can afford to buy an airplane then this isn't a problem.

    5) If your friend teaches you any bad habits they will be hard to un-learn.

I suggest you shop around for another instructor if the one your friend used is too busy. Make some calls, visit some other airports or FBO's. Talk to some other pilots. You'll find someone else whose schedule is more compatible with yours.

  8. h**l no you need an instructor

  9. No.  Sorry.

You need to have your instructional time signed off by a flight instructor certified by the FAA.

Your friend either misunderstood what he read about his privileges as a Private Pilot, or he is just showing off.  You can ride with him all you want, but he cannot contribute to your legal flight instruction in any way except as a friend and an informed study partner.

    Have fun!

  10. NO !!

Flight instruction can ONLY be done by certified instructors.  It is NOT like learning how to drive.  A flight instructor has to be proficient enough to dig himself / his student out of many trouble.

When I was learning to fly, I put the plane into a stall.  The plane nose dive.  It was the flight instructor who was able to pull it out of a dive.  You and your friend would be dead.

    Good Luck...

  11. Yes and No, legally you must have 20 hours with a instructor which has to sign off on your log book, but you could practice with him and don't be afraid to ask your instructor questions ,that what they are there for

  12. he could but it won't count and you won't be able to get the required solo time. and somebody said he had to be checked out in the right seat. not so. there is no right seat check out required.
