Question:

Flying the Diamond Katana in wind? (pilots please!!)?

I have an introductory flight next week, and It says the wind is supposed to be at 7-14 mph that day. Is that going to be hard for my first flight? Or, what winds are suitable for the Katana and wind for first flight? Thanks!

  1. The katana is a great plane!  I have instructed in it.  It is more than capable of handling those winds.  You should definitely go up.  Those winds are very, very common so the more you experience it the better it will be.  The katana is very aerodynamic and with the very small tail section it doesn't feel cross winds much.  I personally think it is an awesome plane to learn in, much better than a cessna.  Also, the stick instead of yolk is interesting and very easy to pick up.

You will be just fine!  Remember it's your first flight and the whole purpose of it is to introduce you to flying small airplanes and kinda get a feel of the plane.  Although those winds may seem strong to you when you get out there, in a couple months it will be no big deal!  Have a great time!!!

Btw, I have landed the katana w/ 30 kts of crosswind, it's a very capable plane.

Edit:  Just to correct whatwhat..., who has a WHOPPING 40 hours in the plane, sounds like the next chuck yeager.  Anyways, the maximum demonstrated crosswind component is NOT the most the plane can handle.  It is exactly what it says maximum DEMONSTRATED crosswind component.  This is just the crosswind the test pilots could find on the day they did the proving for the FAA to certify it.  The plane can definitely land with more, that just happened to be the crosswind the day they did crosswind certification.

  2. I have well over 40 hours in the Diamond Katana.

Every airplane has a maxinum "crosswind component" that is the most wind they should handle when landing.

The Katana has a maximum demonstrated crosswind component of 20 kts.

Also - 7-14 mph is not considered a heavy wind. Call me when it's 23 gusting to 34 - that's when things get interesting.

Go to http://www.diamondair.com/  and read more about the Katana. It's a very fun airplane to fly.

    On edit...

bobbs b... why the hate? can't get a date?

  3. I'm sure your flight instructor can handle it.  I think it's capable of about 15 knots (crosswind factor).  Enjoy the ride...

  4. About 50 hours in the Katana.....very slick little plane.  It could be a little tough to make your first landing with a crosswind, but if it's down the runway at 7-14 that'd help you out.  Flying in a little Cessna or Warrior just doesn't compare to this thing.  Have fun

  5. It might make the landing a little rough, but the speed of the wind  wont ake the actual flight any worse unless there is wind sheer, where two layers of air are traveling different direction.

  6. the Diamond Katana is with out a doubt a stable plane. I have been in one when it was windy. (probably the same wind conditions as you) It will be fun.....And besides weather is unpredictable.....Next week may bring calm winds....

  7. In reality, the Katana has a large wing and is more susceptible to wind and turbulence than other planes.

If you are very concerned about wind, then you should discuss this with your instructor or pilot. The goal for your intro flight is to enjoy it. If you are uncomfortable, you won't enjoy the experience and may not continue with your training.

Everyone has their limitations. Stay within yours.
