  1. It does not really matter, as the windows have shades!!!!

You could also ask to sit in an inside aisle seat.

  2. We flew last year from LA to Australia, but the flight started at like 10:30pm, so as soon as I got on the flight and put my eye mask on, I went to sleep. When I woke up it was about 6:30 am California time, so that was not bad. Quantas gives out free masks, ear plugs and a few other things if you are flying with them. It was 14 & 1/2 hours from LA to Sydney and the flight was not that bad and I expected the worse. We sat on the left side on a asle seat, so we could get up and down easy, so the sun never bothered us at all.

  3. Unfortunately, as you will be crossing the Equator, the answer is both sides.  From Australia, it will be to the north (left side) in the beginning when you will be in the southern hemisphere then switch to the south (right side) as you enter the northern hemisphere.
