Can an American Stafford Terrier puppy fly on the plane with me under my seat? I live in Florida and the Airlines say it's too hot for the dog to fly in cargo to Cinnci, Oh. The dog is almost 4 months old.

  1. It will depend upon the airline - some will only let service dogs ride in the cabin - others will allow small dogs of certain breeds in the cabin [not all - not even in the cargo or baggage compartment, such as dogs with short noses like pugs, bulldogs etc - also 'guard dog' types like Dobermans and Rottwielers].  Be aware that some airlines also restrict puppies or very young animals from flying at all.   When temperatures are high as in summer you might try to find a 'red-eye' or night flight when it's much cooler - but in any event you will have to check with each individual airline or the airline's agent.

  2. You need to contact the airline you wish to fly on to see what their pet policies are.  Some airlines, Southwest for example, don't allow any animals on except for service animals (which they're required to by law).

This is some general info about flying with a dog in the cabin:

The dog must be under 20 pounds and must fit into an airline approved carrier.  The dog must be fully enclosed in the carrier (no head sticking out) and the carrier must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.  The carrier does count as one of your carry on items.

You will need a heath certificate for you dog dated no more than 10 days prior to flight.

Most airlines limit the number of cabin pets per flight.  You will need to make arrangements with the airline prior to flight.  Most will charge a fee of $50-100+ each way.

If your dog becomes disruptive during the flight you can be removed from it.  This means, they have the power to divert the flight to the nearest airport and off load you and the dog.

Your dog will need to remain in the carrier from the time you enter the airport until you leave the airport at your final destination.  Your dog is not allowed to walk on a leash in the terminal.

You will need to restrict all food and water for at least 12 hours prior to flight so the dog does not need to eliminate.
