  1. All four states are "flyover country".  You have to fly over California to get to Los Angeles or San Francisco.

The term comes from those flying coast-to-coast and forgetting there is a United States below them.  Is it derogatory?  I don't have a clue and could care less.

  2. Flyover country is a term used by elitist snobs who think that only New York and L.A. matter.

None of California is flyover country since  even Northern CA, because they grow a lot of pot there is considered "cool". The hippies up there are cool as long as they are not so close that you have to smell them.

  3. Flyover country is the land between major cities in the U.S. which people fly between to reach other major cities, often used as a bad term since not many people stop in those areas.  To find out which states, take a map of the U.S. and make a direct line from New York to the major cities of the U.S. Los Angeles and Chicago.  I would guess Utah, and if they consider Austin, TX a major city, then Tenessee also.  For a more detailed definition look below =p

Flyover country or flyover states is a somewhat derogatory Americanism popular among entertainers, businessmen, and others concerned with doing business on the coasts. The name comes from the fact that many such individuals shuttle between coastal locations — e.g., Manhattan and Los Angeles — by air. "Flyover country" thus refers to the part of the country that such Americans only view by air. Even Chicago, one of the larger cities in the U.S., is often considered part of the region. However, the term tends to refer to regions such as the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains which are sparsely populated and not as much of a draw to visitors as the coastal regions. It is a term that became somewhat common during the 2000 U.S. presidential election due to the tendency of such states to lean towards George W. Bush.
