Okay i have just found out that one of my foals has something on his eye that was like a little ball ball of scab, and our farm manager went and picked at it. I have had the vet out and she said it is cancer. I had, had the vet out before the manager started picking at it and they just said it was a scab from rubbing up against things. Do you think the reason he has cancer now it because she picked at it when it was getting better?

HELP!!

  1. No.

Picking at things does not cause cancer.  It was cancer before it scabbed.

Do treat it asap (as in, immediately) and do the follow up diligently.

It does not have to be a death sentence for your foal.

  2. I really don't think she has cancer right now because she picked at her scab. You should ask your vet about that. And if she does have cancer, I'm really sorry. I hope she gets better.

It might be your barn managers fault. In the night after it got picked, bacteria could've entered. So best wishes!

  3. This doesn't make any sense- cancer is exceedingly RARE in foals, to the point where it almost doesn't exist, in fact. I have never heard of a foal getting diagnosed with cancer because someone picked at a scab on the animal's eye. You need to have a different vet come out and give the foal a thorough exam- and if necessary, have him looked at by an opthalmologist as well. This is a vet who specializes in diseases and disorders of the eyes. I think what you are going to find is that the foal has an eye infection, or possibly a scratch on the cornea, which is causing his problem. The likelyhood that he has cancer is almost non-existent.

Good luck, I hope your horse gets better.

  4. :'( im so sorry to hear about the cancer, i really pray to god that it gets better!!!  i dont think it was caused by the picking at it...though it could be a good idea to ask a vet what happened!

sending all my love to the foal and hope he gets better!!

  5. Hi,

i just wanted to send you a huge hug, i have a foal myself and i imagine you are going out of your mind.

I dont really know the answer to your question, but just follow the advice of your vet, and if you are not sure about what they are telling you, get another vet to look at it.

I'm sure it will be treatable if it is cancer, as it sounds as if it has been caught early.

Hope it all gets fixed. X

  6. I am so so so sorry about your foal. That's to bad i hope he gets better soon!! i send my love!! and i will pray for him. i dont think that whenpossibilityd at it it gave him cancer but talk to your vet first. i send my love and my hope. I hope he gets better give him a big hug from me

  7. I'm very sorry to hear that your foal has cancer! Hope you can treat it soon.

i'd say no, as far as i know there as never been a link to picking scabs and getting cancer - for any animal. Think about it, picking a scab is no different to scabs getting knocked off which happens all the time.
