Foals hair growing in a different color?

My colt is about two months old now, he's a chesnut, lighter in the bottom, and coppery on top. He has quite a few scrapes and cuts on him and he has hair growing back, but a totally different color. His dam is a bay tobiano, and her red is like almost the mahogony color, and thats the color that his hair seems to be growing back as. Is that different of a shade normal? Does that indicate what his adult color may be?

  1. Yes, it's very typical for the foal coat to be an entirely different shade!  The only thing that generally stays the same is the white markings.

Sounds like he'll be more of a mahogany as an adult.  Any scrapes on his legs growing in black?  If so, probably bay, but perhaps just a rich chestnut.

BION, my first foal was cream colored but grew up to be true black!  He was gorgeous...  but a real shock to see him change over.

Ibbibud:  Wow, what a coincidence!  You can never tell with these amazing creatures.

  2. Yes! That is exactly what happened. As your colt matures the rest of his coat will shed and grow back as that mahogony color. Its kind of like when kittens are born there eyes are blue and sometimes they don't change until they are about 1 1/2 years old.

  3. i think it's completely normal for a colt to lose it's baby hair and come back another color.  we had a colt born last year that was red.  he's now a dark brown, almost black.  we've had 2 born this year.  we're excited to see what color they will turn out to be!

  4. Yes, foals are usually born a differant color than they will be as mature horses.

  5. Yes, it is entirely normal, and it is usually a good indicator of his adult coat color. I had a colt who was a light buckskin his first couple of months and was I ever surprised when he came out jet black! I have had two maximim sabinos who were richly colored at birth. One was a deep sorrel pinto and the other was a buckskin appaloosa. When their baby coats molted, they were both snow white. You could see the black skin/white skin underneath, but they were as white as white can be. I have a filly who was born black, which faded to a mousy brown, and she is now coming in salt and pepper grey.

Zephania: It sounds like we had similar experiences! Our black was definitely creamlike as a newborn, what looked to me like a very dilute buckskin. It was amazing to see his change!

  6. It is perfectly normal, all foals change their color as they get older. it could be his adult color, but he might also change again. My foal is chestnut to, but he seems to be turning black or dark dark bay. No worries, and you will never know his true color until he is at least a year old.

  7. He still can change colors until around 3yr. I have had a few foals change color. Yes, it is very normal for them to shedd their baby fuzzies out! I love this part of babies!!! LOL You never know what your going to get! LOL
