When an object is placed 6 cm in front of a converging lens, a virtual image is formed 7 cm from the lens. What is the focal length of the lens?

  1. If the image is a virtual image on the same side of the lens as the object then the lens equation yields a negative image distance.

    1/do  + 1/di  = 1/f

    1/6  + 1/-7 = 1/f

    f = 42cm
