Question:

Focus motor adapter for Nikon D40, D40X and D60?

I was looking on the internet and was wondering if there is some sort of adapter that gives the d40/x and d60 the ability to focus lenses with the s***w drive connection that do not include a motor inside them. I was thinking of something that would go between the camera body, and the lens its self. I thought this would be a good question!

  1. i havent found one yet and am thinking of moving to the d80 because of it but, hopefully someone will reply with info as i want to know too.

  2. I don't think that is achievable. The lenses are designed to very exacting specifications for a certain distance between the lens elements & the imaging plane. If you insert an adapter in between the camera body & the lens, then the geometry changes completely. That would pretty much make it impossible to have an adapter that does not alter the other characteristics of the lens, like the focal length.

If the adapter is allowed to change the focal length of the lens, then this may be possible. I doubt that there would be significant commercial value to such an adapter.

  3. That doesn't exist and won't ever exist.

If you need to auto-focus with non AF-I/ AF-S auto-focus lenses on the cheap, look for a used D50, D70, or D70s. The D50 was phased out and replaced by the D40 (which evolved into the D40X and D60); the D70(s) was replaced by the D80. Otherwise just buy a D80 or up.

With a D300 and up you can even meter with old AI and AIS manual focus lenses... if you happen to have any of those.

Alternatively, $105 will buy you a split prism focusing screen for a D40(X) / D60. If you´re interested, visit http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/item--Nikon...

    Nice website.

And, oh yeah, nice first question here. It´s certainly more technical than we´re used to. We usually get ´Oh c**p, I dropped my camera and the lens is stuck´ type questions ;-)

Hi JtC. They get good reviews, too.

  4. There is no such beast that I am aware of. Even if there were it would not be worth it. You are better off buying the proper lenses.

  5. I don't know of one and I would think that anything large enough to house the motor would probably change the focal length.

Even with my lenses that do focus automatically I still focus manually at times. With a little practice you will find that doing so is not a big deal to me but then again I only went digital about 2 years ago and all of my film cameras were old enough to be manual focus

Added : OMG thanks for the link on the split prism center ring. Thats one feature from my old SLR I missed on the digital. Now I can add it back on

  6. Everyone else said what needed to be said.

I'd just like to add that I'm very impressed by your photography. You definitely have a good eye. One thing you may want to do is add a watermark to your photos on your website. It'd suck to do all that beautiful work only to have someone rip it off.
