Fog and wind delay first round of Avantha Masters
The first round of the Avantha Masters has been put on halt owing to inclement weather and visibility issues.
A Professional Golf Tour of India official explained the conditions prevalent at the course saying, “The visibility was so low that I could not see the fairways. You could not see beyond 20-30 feet, it was so bad. Things look better now but I’m afraid quite
a few golfers will have to return tomorrow to complete their first round.”
The €1.8 million event that has been sponsored by the European tour, Asian tour, and Professional Golf Association of India was due to start at 7.15am local time. However, after waiting for three and a half hours, tournament officials decided to postpone
the game.
It has been raining heavily in India in the past week, which resulted in a film of wind and thick fog on the DLF Golf and Country Club. According to weather forecast details, there was 100% humidity in the air and no visibility beyond 1.3 kilometres.
Despite the conditions, a few players were adamant to complete the round and went out to tee. These players included Thai and Indian golfers who wanted to tune their short game, but after failure to remain vaulted to the ground, returned to the clubhouse.
One of the players was Indian pro Rahil Gangjee, who went out to tee in the first group. Meanwhile, Gaganjeet Bhullar, who won three titles in a row and bagged a top-10 finish last week, remained in the clubhouse. The player is bidding for his fourth title
at the DLF Golf and Country Club.
Bhullar earlier told the press, “I am currently on a winning streak. There is a lot of positive energy around me and that helps me come through even in tough situations. This is the second hat-trick of titles in my career and it has given me the much-needed
momentum ahead of a long and gruelling season.”
The first round of the Avantha Masters has been postponed due to heavy fog and will continue on Friday morning, provided the weather plays in the favour of the game.
