Fog delays play at PGA Championship for second day in a row
Looks like another late start for players at the PGA Championship. For the second time in two days, play has been delayed at the Whistling Straits golf course due to early morning fog. Golf is anticipated to resume at 9:40 am E.T.
Though the delay is frustrating for everyone, it is likely to affect Phil Mickelson in more ways than any other player. On Monday Mickelson revealed that he has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis which commonly affects the joints in the hands, feet, and tendons .
Mickelson has been battling symptoms with anti-inflammatory drugs and self-injections of Enbrel, though the cool weather on the Wisconsin Whistling Straits course could prove to be very painful for him.
Mickelson doesn’t want to be coddled however, and doesn’t see the arthritis slowing down his career or his bid for another major title at the PGA Championship.
“First of all, I don’t want excuses. And second, I don’t want to discuss something when I don’t know what the outcome is going to be. For five or six weeks, I was a little unsure of how this was going to affect me long term, career, what have you. Now that I feel confident it’s not going to affect not only the rest of my career or the rest of my life, but even in the short term it shouldn’t have an effect, I feel a lot better about it and I’m a lot more at ease to discuss it.”
Yesterday play was delayed for three hours and ten minutes, with an additional six minute delay later in the morning. The holdup meant several players were unable to complete their first round owing to the darkness.
Mickelson and 77 other players were unable to finish the opening round, including Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els, Nick Watney who were tied at four-under with leaders Bubba Watson and Francisco Molinari when they were forced to retire for the day. Watson and Molinari competed first rounds at four-under 68.
