Folder Permission Problem!!!?

Hi Everyone,

Recently my Compaq Presario 900 laptop decided to die on me, after serving me for about 7 years(2001-2008). It won't even power up. Its completely dead. I'm trying to recover my stuff from the Hard Drive. I removed it from the laptop and put it into an enclosure. It shows up fine in My Computer and I can access the drive. But I can't access the My Documents folder in Documents and Settings. It says F:\Documents and Settings\Mark Hannelly is not accessible. Access Denied. I'm wondering how I can get into it and get back my files! Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Mark

  1. If you are using XP Professional, you can set the permissions manually for the folders.

Right-click on a folder giving you problems, and choose Sharing and Security (or Properties).

    Select the Security tab.

    Click the first Add button.

Type everyone, then click on Check names.  Everyone should now be underlined.

    Click OK.

Select the Everyone account (single click)

Check the checkbox under the Allow column for Full Control.  Click Apply, then OK.

This should get you in.  You may need to do this for any folders within that folder, but it's a starting point.

And, for future reference, if you set a password in XP, do NOT make files and folders private.
