Folding An American Flag

I would like to know how to fold an American flag properly so it fits into a triangular shape display case. I bought the case for the flag for my husband's birthday next Monday that was flown while he was in Afghanistan. But, I do not know how it is supposed to be folded. Please help!

  1. Bring the striped half up over the blue stars. Folding it in half, then fold it again.  You start at the lower lower striped end and fold at 45 degress to the upper edge forming a triangle.  Then fold the upper point in to form another triangle. Continue until the entire length of the flag is folded, like if you are folding a paper football - if you know what I mean!   When you get near the end - nothing but the blue stars are to be showing - tuck the last bit into the other folds to secure it.  The dimensions in the fold will produce exactly 13 folds (not including the tucked portion.)  If you didn't triangle-fold it 13 times, then, you'll have to repeat all over again until then.

Always respect Old Glory!  Oorah!  In military traditions, each of the 13 folds represent a particular interesting notion of our country.  I just don't remember what each fold was to represent.

  2. Its impossible to explain, but it's folded like a paper football. You first fold it into 3 overlapping strips and then diagnally repeatedly and inside opposite directions. Like I said, impossible to explain. Why dont you just google it?

  3. May take some practice runs but it is fairly simple...takes two people

Fold the flag in half lengthwise..... then fold it again lengthwise.....you should now have a long narrow strip with the blue field showing at one end and red and white stripes on the other......

on the red /white end.....fold it over about 3 inches......now take the bottom right corner and fold it up to meet the top left edge forming a triangle..... the pointed end will be in your left hand

....now take the point and fold it along the top edge.....again making a triangle but the end of the flag will be square now...... fold the left corner over to meet the right edge again making a triangle only with the point in your right hand now...... continue this process until you reach the end of the flag..... if you did it correctly / tightly..... you will have a triangle with the gromets alined on one edge and just three stars visable on the opposite side.... good luck
