Question:

Folding bikes... are they safe?

My mom and I want bikes that are easier to transport. We recently tried out a few folding bikes from a camping store. I thought it was an interesting concept but is it safe? What should we pay for them? Are there certain brands we should look for?

  1. There are quite a number of good folding bikes out there today, but as everything, you get what you pay for.

    I was responsible for designing a series of folding bikes which sell from $400 to $2000. This required me to buy and/or ride just about every brand and model you could think of. Since I don't want to reveal who I work for, I'll just tell you what you should consider when looking at them...

    1) Easy folding/solid unfolding- make sure the sales person DEMONSTRATES the folding/unfolding and then YOU try it. If it seems difficult or cumbersome consider this when comparing. Folding should take 30 seconds or less, unfolding 45 seconds or less;

    2) While riding the bike if you hear weird creaks or scrapes, or if the bike doesn't seem to "feel" right give the salesperson a chance to correct it. If they can't then don't buy the bike. Kent folding bikes are notorious for this problem;

    3) Just because it is a folding bike doesn't mean it doesn't have to fit you. Ask the salesperson to adjust the bike to you... if he can't then consider another bike (or another store);

    4) Ask about the store experience in repairing folding bikes. There are specific issues with folders that have to be addressed. Do NOT buy a bike at a store that doesn't offer service;

    5) Avoid ALL folding bikes that sell under $300. I didn't find a single one that I felt safe riding or that I thiught was durable enough for long term use. If you want brands, think about Bike Friday, Dahon, Fuji, and Giant. Pinnacle (in the UK) is a good bike as well.
