Follow-up phone call to a company after applying online to them

Question

I just applied yesterday to a company for a job, by filling out an online application. My dad told me to call the company and follow up with them, also on the application webpage they gave the address and telephone number of the person to contact. What should I tell the person on the phone? Can I explain about my skills and tell them just to consider my application and try to schedule an interview? Is that ok or is it rude?
