Question:

Follow up q from Could a TB yearling jump a 4.5-5ft gate?

I posted yesterday as one of the TB yearlings I look after had jumped out of his field (I assume, because there is no other possible way he could have gotten out) and injured himself quite badly. He has never tried to escape before.

I checked the 2 year old he is in the field with this morning and he has scraped his neck and shoulder with barbed wire, quite deeply. (These are not my horses, and if they were they would not be within a mile of barbed wire!!)

It is making me wonder now whether there is some kind of animal worrying them. They are in the field with 2 other older horses and both of them are absolutely fine. I don't think it's a case of rough and tumble playing between the two youngsters as their injuries don't really add up to that. I live in Ireland by the way, so there are no wild bears or anything like that!!

Any thoughts?? thanks

  1. yes he could could jump it im in ireland too i would put up electric fence with white tape so they will see it in the distance

  2. it is possible for the horse to of jumped the fence, but unusual. unless the horse was frightened.maybe a loose dog. i had a horse years ago who was just an escape artist.keep an eye,and maybe a few more checks during the day is all i can recommend really.hope this helps a little.sue

  3. WOW! big gate! there normally 4ft. Well I shouldn't have thought he'd be able to jump it but possibly. Isn't there a smaller fence he could've jumped? Is the barbed wire neat or in a mess? If its messed up you could possibly report the owners for it being dangerous especially as the horses have allready been injured. Hope this helps!! xx

  4. Youngsters can jump high.  They also could be being bullied by other horses in the field.  They could be being spooked by foxes or something similar or unfortunately there are peopel who will chase horses around to see them gallop etc ie teens etc.  They might have spooked them.
