1. yes, that is a symptom of being ADD. i have it and do the same thing. you might want to talk to your doctor about it and any other symptoms you may have.

  2. I have a question for you. Does it help if they write down what they want you to do?

Often very normal people can have several deficits that can cause these issues. They include:

Auditory processing deficits: This means that you don't easily process what you hear. You hear it, but it isn't making sense.

Auditory memory deficits: You may have a short term auditory memory deficit that makes it hard to hold something you have heard in memory long enough to do it. I have that trouble when I try to do math in my head. Sometimes it just "disappears."

Receptive language deficits: Some people have trouble understanding what they hear and the problem is based in the language areas of the brain.

None of the above mean that you aren't intelligent. Obviously you are intelligent enough to ask this question.

My advice to you is to ask people to write down what they want you to do. Your visual channels will be your strengths, so it is good to use them. If people ask why, tell them that you need it written because you have trouble doing what is asked when it is just told to you.

You are not alone in this! I work with plenty of smart kids who need visual schedules to understand the school day.
