  1. Yes, but it's hardly in everyday usage - maybe a bit old fashioned now. I've heard it in the context of, say, a street demonstration is beginning to foment trouble (i.e. there's going to be a riot). Also I remember my mother talking about her childhood and how "hot fomentations" (poultices) were used to treat certain medical conditions.


  2. I'm glad I looked it up. I was going to say that that is what beer does while it is being made, "foment". Geez it's "ferment" for crying out loud. Vocabulary is one of my weaknesses which is why I never answer these questions. Continued practising of this poor skill will soon lead me down to the market to buy a few "O-pears" for lunch. "Oh, that's a pear!" Yes it is Mr. Scanner. [Inside joke.]
