Question:

Food Crisis!?

I ordered some take out from this Chinese restaurant. I have eaten there before and never had a problem but this last time, it will definitely be the last, my wife found a cockroach in her pad Thai! I took the food back, got our money back and the next day my wife called the city health department but they didn't really seem to be interested in doing anything about it. I guess they made the claim but that is about it. They even said the restaurant may not even come to pick up the claim.

Is there anything else that can be done?

  1. I would check into your state's webpage.  Try looking through either the Attorney General's section, or the State Agriculture section.  There should be something there about filing a complaint.  Also see if you can do anything through the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org).  It sounds odd that the restaurant has to pick up a claim.  Pennsylvania's restaurant inspections are done through the Agriculture department, I know.  You can also find websites for restaurant reviews, where you can describe your experience for future diners.  Yahoo Local has a business rating system.

It's not right at all to find a cockroach in your food, that is unacceptable.

  2. No, nothing else can be done.

Health inspectors see roaches all the time in food establishments and it's nothing new to them.

Even some of the finest establishments on Earth have a roach problem.

    Even the cleanest places.

Many roaches get into the establishment with the paper goods they order.IE Bags, straws( anything cardboard).

Roaches love paper, cardboard etc etc.

Prob is the restaurants also have to be very careful how they treat the infestation( no harsh chemicals which can contaminate the food and poison a person).

    Not an easy task.

    It's quite a problem.

As disgusting at it seems, you do realize that we consume( on average) 1lb. of insects insect parts, and rodent hairs each year ( I'll edit and send the link). It's legal and the FDA has given their blessing ( with a guideline) to "allowable" amounts per ounce.

If we didn't, we would actually starve to death.

When you eat chocolate, vegetables( especially tomato's) tomato products IE Ketchup, pizza sauce, tomato sauce, fruit, even baked products.

    The list is endless.

The difference is that we don't see them and never knew we ate them.

Yes a roach in your food( seeing it is gross). But remember

i's not the bug you see, it's the bug that you don't see.

    More info coming.

    raroo said it well

I didn't want to upset you any further but I use to eat in a diner in NY all the time and once there was a fly in my dish( dead).

I still went back because being in the business, I understand how easily this can happen.

It can happen when your cooking at home also.

A fly, a mosquito, all kinds of bugs can accidently fall in your food.

If they were appologetic and professional, I wouldn't look to go any further then what was already done.

  3. no one { generally speaking that is } likes to see a bug in their food .

unfortunately it's actually quite common, most of the time you don't know about it .

If it's really got you that disturbed your best bet is to spread the word , keep in mind they did not put this in there intentionally - don't hurt them just to do it

if this place is real nasty burn 'em a new one  - but i doubt you would have been going there if it was like that .
