My son is 15mths old, and I want to make sure he eats properly and gets everything he needs. Is there a Canadian or American food guide for young toddlers?

I live in Canada, and The New Canada's Food Guide is only for people over the age of 2yrs.

Is there a plan or guide to help determine how much someone should eat? and of what? my son is 32lbs 3ft tall and 15.5mths old. so he doesn't eat as much as the average kid his age, because he's such a big boy.

  1. Just feed him the same things you eat. He will get a balanced diet if you feed him all sorts of things. I wouldn't worry how MUCH he eats though. Our pediatrician told us that toddlers go through growth spurts and slow growth periods, and their appetites will change accordingly. He said to just let them eat as much or as little as they want, and not to worry too much about it.

  2. Number one rule:

Never ever say eww at the table. And don't let anyone else do it either. If your kid eats vegetables and fruits and meat or other protein and drinks water and milk then he should be fine.

Present new food as something new to try. Our house rule was a teaspoon of the new food had to be eaten and there would be no comments like the above. If a child doesn't like the food after trying it then don't force it on them. Only present it again later if its important to have available and follow the 1 tsp rule again.

I'm always surprised at what kids will eat and like.

My kid liked carrots to the exclusion of all other vegetables for several months. The she discovered pizza! Now she eats All vegetables and fruit and most meats and grains. She is 18 and extremely active and healthy.
