Question:

Food Safety Concerns in Puerto Rico?

I have read conflicting things about food safety in Puerto Rico. Is it safe to eat salads and fruits just about anywhere in Puerto Rico? Or do you need to only eat foods that have been cooked? We are going on vacation there in a couple of days.

  1. it is very safe to eat anything in puerto rico

i dont know where you got that from..

  2. well if you go out and pick a fruit from one of our tropical fruit trees..you might find a worm or something in it..and it might be bad

and since your body isnt used to maybe parasites or some other kind of insect that isnt in the US then you could get sick from it if you dont clean it well.

but the meat and rice are DELICIOUS!! and the one thing you have have HAVE to try is MOFONGO...write it down and ask for it in a restaurant (they have it anywhere)  but some restaurants mofongos are dry and nasty lookin..try looking for fresh foods..with no flies around or anything..

HAVE FUNNN!! im soo jelous :[

  3. Food is very good in PR.  We cook a lot in oil and salsas (sauces) so make sure you can handle it. You can get fresh fruits and veggies almost everywhere and they are good. Supermarkets or at the plazas (town squares). PR has a big variety in food.. our main dishes are super and yummy. Good luck hand good eats!

  4. Ok, I have lived in Chicago for 30 yrs and moved to Puerto Rico in August of 2007 and I can tell you I have eaten food straight from someone else's land and never got sick.  I have not been sick since I have been down here.  I think you will have no issues eating anything down here.

I LOVE PR and PR Food!!!!

  5. u can eat anything.

that's weird? were did u hear that?

the other day I was reading the news paper and when the tomato issue was going around, one of the safest places to eat tomato was here in PR, I ate tomato like crazy and nothing happened to me. the food its good, of course like any other place u need to always see the expiration dates for your health, if u dont see a label, dont buy it. but most do have them and try to buy in known supermarkets such as Amigo, Walmart, Pueblo, Pitusa, Grande. avoid the little stores were sometimes they might have spoiled foods.

but otherwise, we dont have problems with food poisoning or bacteria outbreaks like some European countries. the water is drinkable and the food its eatable in most of the island. beware of trees that might look like they have eatable tropical fruits and sometimes they are not safe, before tasting ask a local and they know all the eatable tropical fruits.

  6. the same FDA we have in the continental US is present in Puerto Rico.  Eat and drink to your heart's content

  7. You can safely eat fresh fruits and veggies with very little concern.  You will not get any of the E coli problems you hear about from other less developed places.

Even the drinking water meets US standards, so you can drink the tap water.
