  1. Arctic population cycles influence the whole inland ecosystem, the shore areas have moderating influences. Small rodents are inland prey species.  The key is lemmings (Lemmus and Dicrostonyx), either as prey for carnivores or as consumers of plants in areas they inhabit. Foxes here show a bimodal pattern of litter size (small ~ eight pups and large ~ fourteen pups) in response to prey numbers.

    However the foxes range into areas where they rely on sea birds, fish, seals and marine invertebrates and do not show the variation in litter size because the prey is varied and stable.
