  1. Sorry to cut across cookies' info... but if you ask "acqua normale" you won't get tap water (maybe try "acqua del runinetto"). Bars, restaurants, fast food etc in Italy usually don't serve tap water.

I am italian, if you have few specific questions I will answer.

  2. That depends on where you eat.  I am from Italian family, and go to Italy twice a year.  It depends on what city you go to and where you choose to eat.  No one can answer that question for you.  Its like here in America, I can eat at Burger King, or go to Red Lobster, and they are way different prices!!!

  3. 1) Be mindful of the cover charge (coperto) which is per person, bread charge (pane) also per person and the service charge (servizio) which can range from 10%-15% of the bill. All these charges would be clearly stated on the menu, so bear that in mind before being seated. If service is NOT included, you are expected to calculate and add that to the total.

#2) If you order items to go/eat standing up, those charges are not applicable.

#3) Don't be afraid to wander and compare prices. A few euros here and there can add up.

#4) Seek out the local supermarket and buy drinks in bulk!!! A giant 1.5L bottle of water for .16 Euro or the usual 16oz. bottle for 1 Euro...you get the idea.

#5) If you order water for your meal, you can ask for "acqua normale" which is tap water.

#6) In most cases, when I ordered my secondo course (entree) there isn't a side of veggies, as you may be use to. You'll need to order a separate contorno (side dish) or insalata (salad) to balance your meal. When in doubt, ask.

    Finally, some suggestions:
