If I set the temp control high enough so that things in the freezer stay frozen, then everything on the top two shelves in the refrigerator freezes also. If I set it so that things in the refrigerator don't freeze, then everything in the freezer melts. (This is an all-in-one unit with a small freezer and only the single control.)

  1. THIS KIND OF REFRIG. HAS A DEFROST HEATER IN IT,ALONG W/THE THERMOSTAT,IF EITHER GETS OUT OF SYNC,THIS IS THE RESULT,LOOK UP TOP OF THE REFRIG COMPARTMENT,SEE IF YOU CAN SEE A s***w /ONE WAY SLOTS(CAN ONLY BE TURNED ONE WAY)TURN IT ONE COMPLETE TURN,THAT SHOULD RESET THE CYCLE TIMER,IF IT WORKS THEN YOU MAY HAVE FIXED IT YOURSLF.

MOST OF THE ALL IN ONE MODELS ARE SET UP THIS WAY,(HOTPOINT,G.E.,LG,ROPER)TO NAME A FEW.GIVE IT A TRYALSO MAKE SURE THAT THE SPLITTER GOING TO THE REFRIG.FROM THE FREEZER ISN'T FROZE UP AND NOT LETTING AIR GET TO THE REFRIG.AS EASY.

  2. Single control is the key, methinks. When the thermostat starts going bad, you don't have much choice. Dependent upon where you live and how handy you are, you might be able to replace the thermostat yourself for little money.

The part runs about 15 -20 bucks but the repair charges and labor can out-pace the value of the fridge. If it's a low-end model, I would sell it and buy another, if I couldn't replace the thermo myself. If it over-cools, it makes a good "beer fridge" for the garage.

I would make sure I bought a unit with separate controls, as well. It's been my experience that single control units act up in summer heat, in the Deep South, even when they work correctly. My dual temp fridge gets testy when the out door temp gets over 100 and my kitchen gets really hot.

I also clean my seals regularly on the doors and check for a good fit. If you see mold growing in your door seals, the gaskets are your problem. My current fridge is lower-end Kenmore and I hear a vacuum noise every time I open and close the doors. It's 10 years old and works like a charm. It has a freezer control, fridge control and eco setting, no ice-maker.

  3. Yes.  Your unit is old enough that new ones will be noticeably more efficient.  The new ones have separate thermostats.

  4. It's time for a new refrigerator. There's no time to be fooling around with the frig. when there's food to be spoiled.

  5. just use it as a big freezer where the two top shelves just mutated to freezer status :) Cook once a month then freeze the rest!

Honostly, I make my own frozen meals and after a while there's so much variety I eat every day something different for 30 days in a row.

But I have a huge freezer.

  6. Clean the hair dust and cobwebs off of those bottom coils under the ice box. It may start cooling again.

  7. I THINK IT CAN BE FIXED--IF I REMEMBER RIGHT THE AIR IN THE FREEZER COOLS THE AIR IN FRIG AND IT SEEMS LIKE TO MUCH AIR FROM FREEZER IS GETTING INTO FRIG--THERE ARE- AIR VENTS IN FREEZER TO LET AIR IN LOCATED AT BACK OF FREEZER BE SURE THAT THEY ARE CLEAR---DONT BLOCK THEM BY PUTTING FOOD AGAINST THEM--CALL A REPAIR MAN FOR INFO

  8. defiantly time my friend! haha. Try the new LG refrigerator. It is nice =D

  9. Check the thermostat and see if that can be repaired
