Question:

Food on an air plane?

I am traveling out of state on an air plane. I will be bringing my electric skillet with me so that I can save some $ and cook food in the hotel room instead of eating out all weekend. I am going to bring pancake mix because I know that that would be easy to pack in my luggage and mix up in the hotel. I am looking for any suggestions on what to pack ether in my check in bags or in my carry on bags that would make a 4 hr trip easily and I can cook or not cook on my electric skillet?

  1. What about some simple sandwiches, like peanut butter sandwiches, tuna or salmon sandwiches with a little mayo, ham and cheese  with veggies like tomatoes or lettuce? Also you can make wraps with tortillas. You can also make healthy fruit salads and vegetables salads and use almonds or pine nuts for added protein. If you buy canned beans you can make some dip to go with whole grain crackers. These are all NO* cooking ideas...

  2. Try bringing chips, mini-packs of dry cereal, home-made sandwiches, or maybe stop in at your local deli, Safeway, or Wal-Mart and pick up some pizza pockets or fried chicken. But if you want something thats healthy, pack some cut-up vegetables or fruits in a ziploc bag or maybe some low-fat Pringles (those are my favorite!). Browse the deli at your local Wal-Mart and see if you can find some sub sandwiches there. They are filling yet moderately portioned, and they are relatively inexpensive.

    About that skillet...

If you're going on a flight, a heavy iron skillet will take its toll on your back if you lug it around the airport. In addition, the skillet will make it harder for you to lift your carry-on into the overhead bin, and personally, I'd hate to imagine what would happen if you accidentally dropped your bag on someone in the process. There are often inexpensive breakfast-serving restaurants near hotels, and if you want to be really economical, just stop in at McDonalds for a $1 breakfast sandwich; it's got more nutrients than pancakes alone. Besides, if you bring pancake mix, where are you going to get the plate, butter, syrup, and fork? Even if you manage to bring all that stuff with you, it would be nearly impossible to wash your dishes in the hotel sink.

  3. Why on earth lug an electric skillet?  Check your reservation and see if there's a microwave, coffeepot and fridge in your hotel room.  Buy your food at your destination, even if you are going to prepare it in your room!  You can use the microwave or coffeepot to heat water for instant soup, oatmeal, tea, and so on.  If there's a fridge, you can get fruit or even microwaveable meals.  You're only going for the weekend!

As far as bringing food with you, check with TSA and your airline to see what you're allowed to carry on.  There are liquid restrictions and so forth to deal with now, and you might not be allowed to bring more than a few ounces of liquid onto the plane (you don't mention which airline you're flying on).  You're only traveling for four hours, so unless you have blood sugar problems or something, you shouldn't worry too much about bringing food with you.  If you do, be sure to tell the airline; they're more lenient with people who need to eat or drink regularly because of health issues.
