Question:

Food or Fuel?

If all the worlds corn production went to fuel and NOT food it would still not have a significant impact on oil consumption, but there would be no feed for livestock and food prices would soar. Is this Al Gore trying to starve humans out to save the planet or has he just found a way to make a buck off "Carbon Units"??

  1. If you listen to the farmers, and I am one, they say that ethanol is the greatest thing because it forces corn prices sky high. But I think that their were several unintended consequences. Food riots going on round the world over corn. Oil prices have not reduced, they have gone up.

  2. How about fuel from garbage?

  3. When I started coming to YA there was a lot of people saying farmers were on welfare because the government was propping up grain prices. They felt that the farmer who could not make it without the government should go under. Now that the farmer has found a way to make a lot of money some on YA are saying it isn't fair to the food consumer.

I think that is the way a lot of global warming people are. They want everything to go green, but they will scream when prices go up.

  4. Food, please.

    However...

not all the corn in the world will go to fuel production. Corn isn't the most efficient burner. Some fuels are being made with switchgrass - yep, weeds. And, if you follow that type of logic, other fiber plants may soon be researched as well.

Also, at least here, for a very long time, farmers were paid to not grow anything (sell your cows, folks). If we get all the farmers growing food at once, it will be fabulous. Now, if we can just get them to turn away from chemical pesticides...

  5. I am supposed to be polite.
