Question:

Food prices in Turkey

I'm heading to Turkey next week with my boyfriend. We're on a bit of a tight budget, so we expect to eat picnic style at least once a day and probably one restaurant/cafe meal pr. day. (getting bread, fruits and so on at the supermarket or market). What are the prices for daily groceries in Turkey? And also: 1) what is the typical price for a pint of beer and 2) is it possible to get any dark, wholegrain bread in Turkey? Thanks a lot for your help!

  1. Street markets are much cheaper than supermarkets.

    1kg tomatoes = 0.5ytl (about 25 euro cents)

    1kg peaches = 1ytl (about 50 euro cents)

    - street market prices -

Beer in bars is anything from 3ytl (1.5 euros) to 10ytl (5 euros) for 50cl.

You can get wholegrain bread in most supermarkets and some bakkals (corner shops). The one I buy is sliced and sold in a plastic packet. It's called "cok tahilli" and is made by "Uno". It's about 3.30ytl (1.6 euro) a loaf. You can also find "kepekli" (brown) bread almost anywhere for less than 1ytl (50 euro cents) but it isn't that good.

Insect repellent is widely available. Both "off" and "defans" contain deet. Defans is the cheaper at 2.90ytl (1.4 euro) for 100ml.

  2. They're usually very cheap, but things like chocolate and walnuts are a bit pricey. Bread is really cheap, like 1 YTL, but you can also buy whole wheat bread, which is less than 2 YTL. Though they complain that things are getting really expensive, to Europeans and Americans it's nothing.

I'm not sure how much a pint of beer would cost, but not much.

  3. Shopping for grocery in Turkey is very cheap if you compare to Western European or US markets. For restaurants, it depends. If you like to eat turkish food in fast-food style, it will be cheap, but if you want to sit and eat in a restaurant, it will cost more.

For the wholegrain bread, of course you can find in supermarkets, but it will cost more from any other bread (1.5-2 euros app.)

The most well-known beer is Efes Pilsen, and a bottle of beer is about 1.5 euros. Drinks are more expensive than other countries.
