  1. have you done a Vietnamese make your own roll night? they are so healthy and tasty.  you can find examples on the net.

buy a bunch of rice paper sheets, fresh veggies like carrot, cucumber, bean sprouts, fresh coriander and mint

you can put prawns, chicken, beef, pork, crab (anything you want) as meats, flavor them well what ever you choose. and you don't have to stick with one.

then you'll need some vermicelli noodles aswell..

grate carrots, julienne cucumber etc, arrange it nicly on a huge platter...prepare your meat...cook it up with some nice flavourings of your choice

    prepare your rice vermicelli noodles

put a deep bowl of boiling water inthe middle of table

each person can put their sheet in the boiling water (separately) and soften the sheet...then they put it on their plate, add noodles and any and as much of the other ingredients as they want...then they roll it up

you can use any sauces you like to dip it in.

  2. Make sushi.

  3. I do a Teppanyaki cook it yourself dinner. I have a Breville Oriental Grill, but one or two electric frypans would work just as well.

    Possible ingredients (all raw)

    Thinly sliced fillet steak

    Thinly sliced chicken breast

    Thinly sliced fish

Shelled green prawns with vein removed

    Calamari rings

    Sliced mushrooms

    Sliced spring onion

    Onions

Sliced red and green capsicum (bell pepper)

    Thinly sliced zucchini

    Bean sprouts

    Soft noodles

    Lightly beaten egg

    Minced ginger

    Minced garlic

    Peanut oil

    Sesame oil

    And anything else you fancy.

    Chopsticks or tongs for everyone

Selection of sauces - sweet chilli, soy, teriyaki, wasabi etc.

I also do a rice cooker full of steamed rice.

Great fun and everyone chooses and cooks whatever they prefer, a bit at a time.

  4. How about you and your friends start an alphabet theme. You start with 'A' finding foods beginning in that letter.

like Aberdeengous steak, alphabet spaghetti, angel delight

then your friends try the letter 'B'

    Bolanaise, banana's, bruchetta etc....

  5. Love, love, love the teary-miss-you! Anything I could come up with would pale by comparison. Obvious themes are ethnic foods (Mexican, Italian, etc.) But I think you'd consider them too mundane. How about body parts? Chicken fingers, butterfingers, finger sandwiches, headcheese, head lettuce?

  6. Change the rules to make it a test  of creativity and make the competition tougher -- see who can make the best food / theme within certain budgetary or ingredient constraints. Examples:  Memphis BBQ for under $50 - Irish fare without using corned beef -- Stews or casseroles for under $20.

This will bring out whether some of your friends can really cook or if they just know how to spend money on the show.
