Food workers: What is the single grossest food story you have ever heard or perhaps participated in?

I'll start: I just started working at Carl's Jr in LA. It's a fast food burger place. There was a stainless steel prep counter in the back where we cut tons of tomatoes and lettuce and all that kind of stuff for burgers. A couple times a day some poor sucker was called on to clean it with pickle juice. I'm not kidding. After all the pickles were removed from the 5 gallon buckets, we used the pickle vinegar as a cleaning solvent. It was a terrible job because this counter was huge and long. I kicked the pickle juice bucked ahead of me with my left foot and worked my way from right to left, dipping my dirty rag into the bucket and then wiping and then dipping and then scooting at wiping and on and on. Once, at the end of this process, I dipped but felt something strange. I looked down and saw PICKLES! I quickly removed the hair, boogers and bugs from that 5 gallon bucket and went about my business. All those pickles were served to people.

  1. OMG eww. Why do they clean with pickle juice? That's why I hate pickles. You have beaten just about any gross story I could tell.

  2. I am retching at this very moment, disgusting - is that what the owners kitchen is like at home?

I heard a true story from my Boss about her friend....she went to a Chinese restaurant (in Sydney), she was given the wrong dish, so she told the waiter that it was incorrect and he said they would replace her meal. They did replace it and she even took some home in a container.

Later on that night she became quite ill, so much that she eventually went to the hospital. They asked her what she had eaten, she said that she had some of the food at home in the refrigerator, they tested it and found 3 different types of s***n in the sauce. It ended up that she has now contracted hepatitis from the dish as one of the sperm donors had it -, it may just kill her in the end.

The restaurant was closed down due to the evidence they had.

We do a lot of home cooking now.

  3. This isn't a gross story, not really, but more of a joke. I work as a waitress in a local restaurant, and one time I bought a plastic p***s from a customer that he got from cleaning out someones house, that's what he did for a living. It was still in the box, and I only paid a $1 for it. So this jokester, a regular, came in and ordered a tuna hoagie. So we put that on the roll, and put lettuce and tomato on it to cover it up. He went to break the hoagie, and he found it! I thought we would all die laughing.

Another time a jokester ordered crab salad sandwich, and I had a big fake crab underneath my apron. So when I went to set his food down, with the other hand, I pulled out the crab and threw it at him! I'm lucky he didn't have a heart attack!

We have a lot of fun at where I work. But we do it with style. We don't do gross things. We talk about it, but talk is cheap!!

  4. I've been in the restaurant business for just over 30 years so I've seen and heard some pretty off the wall stuff.  I once heard about a cook with a pretty odd fetish...Ranch Dressing.  According to the story, he would go into the walk-in, remove the lid from the container of dressing, dip in his hand, and use the dressing for masturbatory lube.  As the story goes, he would finish by shooting into the dressing, l**k off his hand and go back to work.
